THE ROCK FAMILY TREE

FAQ

Q: Why did you change the website? A: A change is as good as a rest! Not only that but, I am trying to get the website set up in such a way that it makes updating the information in it easier. Q: How long did it take you to create it? A: According to my wife "To Long". Approximatly 80 hours went into this website and I am still not sure I like it. Q: How does it work? A: The new website separated into 3 areas called "Frames" the top and left frame always stay the same and the webpages are loaded into the right or largest frame. The top frame is just a header and the left frame contains the navigation bars that open the different pages when you click on them. Q: I can't see the "left frame". What Now? A: There is only 2 reasons why you cannot see the left frame. 1 is if you have opened the "Guest Book" and the other is if you are looking at the "Family Tree" in "DFTCOM2". In both cases another window has been opened. Just click on the "X" in the upper right hand corner of your browser to close that window and return to the Home Page. Q: What is "DFTCOM2"? A: "DFTCOM2" stands for "Dynamic Family Tree Version 2". It is a "Stand Alone", Java based, Family tree compiler that was created by "Michael Horey". This program uses compressed files from my Research Program (PAF.5) to create a "Chart Style" Family Tree that is VERY easy to use. Q: How do you use "DFTCOM2"? A: When you click on the Family Photo in the Main Page another page will open up. There is a Table on this page and in the right side of this table is a small tree. Click on the tree and DFTCOM2 will load the information and present it in a "Pedegree Chart" format. Once there, if you place your cursor over a name all of the info on that person be shown in the window on the upper right side of your screen. You can move down the tree by clicking on a name with an arrow under it. If you see a icon that looks like a "letter" click on it and any extra notes we have on that person will be displayed. Click on the "X" to close the window. Any information on "Spouse's Familys" will also be displayed as you move down the tree. Q: The photos in the "Slide Show" seem fuzzy. Why? A: Don't forget, some of these photos are very old, some unkept and some are copies of copies of copies. Sometimes they don't scan well no matter what you do. Remember, we are always on the lookout for old family photos to place on the website and our files. Q: Why are there are no photos of our chidren in the "Slide Show"? A: There are and never will be new photo's of (living) children on the Family Website! Just as there is no personal information such as addresses and phone numbers. There are just to many "weirdo's" on the "web" to take any chances. Q: If that is the case, then why is the Family Tree on the Web anyway? A: We believe that Family Information shoud be free for the Family to access. The World Wide Web makes this very easy. Also, we have found family and had people come forward with information that we might not have received if the Tree wasn't in "Cyberspace". Q: Who pay's for the website? A: The webspace we use comes with my web account. My service provider has given us "unlimited webspace" at no charge. That means that no matter how much info we get, there will always be room in the webpage for it. Q: Why are you researching our family anyway? A: Everybody has different reasons for researching their family. Ours is to try and find out who we are and where we came from. Q: What will happen to this research when you can no longer do the work? A: Copy's of all research, correspondence, cirtificates and photos are to be willed to The National Archives of Canada, Barnsley Family History Society, Trustee's of "The Alice Adams Charity" and to 3 individuals (not yet named)from the next generation who will carry on where we left off. We hope this will make our research accessible to everybody that has an interest. As you can see, we are very serious about our work. Q: Is there a Family Coat of Arms? A: This question has been asked quite a bit. There Is No Such Thing As A Family Coat Of Arms!! According to the College of Arms, Coats of Arms are issued to individuals NOT family's. If there is a Coat of Arms in your family and you can trace your lineage back to the person who the Arms were issued to, you may use the Arms. You should check with the College for more information before doing so. Beware! The "Rock Coat of Arms" that the Heraldry websites will sell you and claim to be 800 years old, were issued to a gentleman who lived in New York. This man is not a member of this family nor are the Arms as old as they claim. Q: What about "Family Crests"? A: There are a couple of different views about Family Crests. One is that the Crest is part of a Coat of Arms, the other is that crests were issued to carry on banners so family's could be identified in battle. I am still looking into which is correct. There is a description I found in "Heraldry Books" of a "Rock Family Crest" issued in the UK centurys ago. The description is of a "Bare forearm, holding a dagger" in a "striking position". Under this is the motto:"nil admirari" which translated means "Not to Admire". There is no proof that this crest belongs to our family.
