Lord Ulrich von der See
MKA Markus Grunwaldt, Passed June 4, 2001

Markus was one of the first people I ever met in the SCA, and was one of the most open and friendly people I've ever knew. He accepted me almost immediately and did everything he could to help me get my feet planted. Creative and imaginative, Markus was a vintner, a pewter caster, a diver, a collector of medieval films (the good and the horribly bad), an archer, a musician...he was many things. I wish I could have had more time to spend with him. His passing diminishes us all.
The last time I saw Marcus was Monday, May 28, at a Canton of Ardchreag dance meeting. In fact he, Thorfinna and I did a dance together (the name of which escapes me). The dance has a double-time cadence, and Thorfinna and I (especially me) couldn't quite get it down. Marcus on the other hand sort of glided about the dance floor, his knees popping high, a large grin on his face. This is how I'll remember him. (That, and the 'Got Mead?' sticker on his truck.)

In the short time I knew Markus it was plain to see that he was extremely generous and self-sacrificing, always willing to put his own needs aside in order to do his best for friends and the SCA. No matter how busy or tired he was, he always had a smile ready and would make me feel welcome and at home. Markus seemed to take great joy in sharing his projects and ideas with others, and was always showing us something new that he had created or was working on, or some new medieval movie he'd found. He was one of the people I was always eager to see at each meeting, and who I looked forward to getting to know better. It was his stories of Pennsic that convinced me to go this summer, his barrel plastic that is becoming my armour so that I can be a fighter, and his smile that will always be in my memory. I will miss him.

Marcus was a dear friend - one person who always gave good advice only when needed, who never asked what was in it for him. I must admit he was a great help during some tough times and always gave me something new to look at. He was generous almost to a fault and I will miss having him smile and hearing his laughter. However, his loss has made me realize how important it is to appreciate the people that we hold dear in our lives while they are still here for us to enjoy.

Marcus did something special for me. He accepted me as I was. He had patience for all my annoying quirks. He was able to see past them to what others missed. Few others have been able to this. My parents have this plaque at home, "True friends are like diamonds; precious and rare". That is what we've lost.

I remember giving him a Wolf's Tooth when I was Prince for chasing after me in the field battle at Pennsic trying to "protect me". It was funny, but he did manage to survive the entire battle and didn't lose me anywhere. I'll miss him as well.
