On January 15, 2004 (AS 38), Thorfinna got word her name and device had finally been accepted (after 2 1/2 years of deliberation). The letter said:

Ŝorfinna gráfeldr. Name and device. Argent, three serpents nowed gules.
Listed on the LoI as Ŝorfinna gra'feldr, the documentation shows the
byname as gráfeldr, not gra'feldr. We have made this correction.

    Nice device!

Persona  Ŝorfinna is a 10th century Norse woman who traveled to many lands while searching for her banished brother. Her search brought her eventually to Ealdormere, and so taken was she by this land, she settled immediately on the High Cliffs of Ardchreag in the Barony of Septentria and vowed to stay. She took a lowland Scot as husband and together they set up house at Ŝorfinnastaadr3, and though it lies deep within Greenhithe Territory, her heart is that of a 'Chreagger through and through. After so many lonely travels, she knows she has found her home.

Who you are in the SCA:  I am a member of the Games Guild of Ealdormere, the Septentrian Performing Arts Troupe, the Bardic College (a skald4), the College of Heralds, the Iron Companions, the Cliffguard (of Ardchreag), and the Yeoman of the White Arrow (of Ardchreag). I am authorized in sword and shield and combat archery and am a level 1 scout. I am also a thrown weapons marshal.

Areas of Interest:   Illumination; armoured combat; horn carving; pewter casting; leather working; metal working; sewing and sooo much more. There isn't enough time in the day...

Current Projects:  A complete poncy 14th century outfit for my husband, including hand casting the buttons and going right down to the shoes; sewing a Norse A-Frame tent; carving a horn

Other Information Throughout the year 2003, Ŝorfinna was a retainer to Duke Sir Finnvaar DeTaahe; Ŝorfinna was a member of "The Usual Suspects", an all Ardchreag team that took first place in the novice late period category at the Golden Seamstress competition in 2003.

Notes:

(1) Thorfinna is a feminine Norse given name, found in the Lándnamabók as it is presented on the Medieval Names Archive Page. It should more properly be spelt with a 'thorn' symbol rather than a 'Th'. It means 'Thor's dearest'.

(2) gra'feldr (which more properly would be written gráfeldr) is a byname found in the Lándnamabók as it is presented on the Medieval Names Archive Page. It means 'grey fur coat'.

(3) "Ŝorfinnastaadr? I thought it was Colynesburg?" - Colyne

(4) A skald was a Norse bard. The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary gives its definition as

Pronunciation: 'skold, 'skäld
Function: noun
Etymology: Old Norse skAld
Date: 1780
: an ancient Scandinavian poet; broadly : BARD

Secondary Persona

Cap'n Widow was created for the Shire of Bastille du Lac's third annual Day of Piracy event. Not much is known about her at this point, except that she is Cap'n Bloodfox's woman. (Or, as she sees it, he is her man.)

And yes, female pirates are period. For quick reference, check out:
