MAZDA  DUCE

Mazda Transmission drive on a 13B engine in a Bakeng Duce.

Owned by Peter Cowan

Engine & transmission assembled by Daniel Trois, Frank Vit and others. Plane completed by Frank Vit near Montreal Quebec Canada in 1998. I purchased it in October 2001.

Bell housing to prop hub with oil but no starter weighs 60lbs. Length overall is 16.5". Ratio 2.25:1. Starter is another 10lbs.

This 60lb number is in contrast to the transmission that George Graham put together at 38lbs.

The gearing used is 2nd gear and all other gears and shift rods have been removed.

This view is from the bottom so first shaft visible is the cluster shaft. Below and to the right is the drive gear and input shaft which exttends out to the flex plate on the flywheel. On the left bottom is the output shaft. The drawing at the end gives aproximate sizes.

The two "ears" are drilled for the "tie rods" that connect the front plate to the bell housing bolts. Daniel who started this tranny project felt they were not required but Frank added them (4 altogether, see first photo). The front plate is bolted to the housing with the 6 black cap screws. The hub is an SAE 2 (4.75" bolt circle with 1/2" bolts) which has been driving a McCauley 75/56 prop that weighs 30 lbs. I am now flying with a 76" Sensenich 15lb wood prop There is a hex nut in the center recess below a circular nut with the two square cut outs.

Here is a drawing with aprox dimensions of just the output shaft section. The shaft to the left rides in a bearing in the input shaft which extends to the flywheel flex plate.
