It was in Toronto, twenty-four years ago, where I first saw you. You were sitting across from me in the subway car. When I got out at my stop I looked back as the doors of the car slid shut, and our eyes met. You smiled softly at me, holding my gaze with yours as the train pulled away from the platform.
I saw you again on a bus from Denver. In fact, I sat beside you for almost an hour, stuck dumb by the miracle of your existence. Several years later, across a library table in Eugene, Oregon, I found the courage to speak to you.
Since then, I have had glimpses of you everywhere I’ve gone. I’ve seen you right here in Peterborough. Just this week you smiled at me again as I rode by on my bicycle.
Robert Edmondson, May 20 2003
